What Is vagcom

Seen a lot of things on here about using a vagcom to recode .
What is a vagcom?
I believe that I can reprograme my van to show me mpg and get the mph on the screen by using the vagcom
Is this true and where Can I get one.

Have a look on Ross-tech.com , the producers of what used to be Vag-Com, it is now VCDS.
The system is a diagnostic and programming tool for VW group vehicles, it also includes a OBD scan function for other brands.
Basic system costs £200 ish, the UK suppliers are listed on the above website, you can view all options and prices on one of their sites.
