Leisure amp wiring - help!

Post by Singletracksheffield »

So I have a new idea… park up no ignition on, camping and the beers are out, need some music of course. I have leisure power and speakers but no way to combine the two right now…

The concept would be to switch the Front Left and Front Right (+ and ground) speaker inputs from the stereo to a leisure “home” amplifier that’s powered from my leisure battery.

From reading up, it is not a good idea to wire 2 amps in series as when one is driving the other will be receiving its outputs and visa versa. I also cannot switch to power the head unit from the leisure battery due to canbus issues.

My concept is shown below. 2 channel (2x positive and 2x ground) output 30w Bluetooth leisure amp, feeds into a 4 pole double throw (4PDT) switch that switches the 2 channels between the stereo and the leisure amp.

I think a relay could do this automatically. I just need to find a reliable 12v ignition source and ground for the relay to switch from its resting state (leisure amp) to the relay activated with ignition on (car stereo)

Although I have basic wiring knowledge from the leisure battery system installation I have done, this is a little beyond me. My unknowns are:

- Where to source 12v ignition input (piggybag fuse from below steering wheel fuse box?)
- Where to ground? Can I use the radio? - I don’t want to mess with canbus!
- Can a 4PDT relay pass through reasonable quality audio, do I need to find a certain ampage rating to deal with amplified audio signals
- This will involve cutting into the stereo out cables so I don’t want to cause any irreversible issues.

Thanks for the help! This should be in the electrical forum but I’ve been on hold waiting for access to the full forum for a good few weeks now.

After having gone camping I considered the value of having the speakers closer and quieter.

This is what I’ve finished with. I use the amp and some surplus 6x9s but not the relay obviously. Used some 12mm ply that once served as the van floor.

Currently waiting for a 12v lead to power from cigarette lighter with a 10m cable

These are mobile rave ready they have got a serious punch to them.
