Caddy Speed Limits ?

Post by X22JME »

What are the caddy speed limits?
50/60 single carriage way ?
60/70 duel carriage way ?

Is it a car derived vehicle/mpv/ panel van

Cheers

60/70 as far as I know, the lower limit only applies to towing or vehicles over 3ton gross capacity but someone correct me if i am wrong

If you have a caddy life, whether it is short wheelbase or long wheelbase, you are subject to normal car speed limits.

If your caddy is a commercial, whether it is short wheelbase or long wheelbase, it is subject to the applicable speed limits for commercial vehicles with a design gross vehicle weight of over 2000kg.
Car derived or not makes no difference in the eyes of the law regarding speed limits in the UK.

As Doc said, car speed limits only for Caddy Life.
For rest of us 50/60 :(

Just to clarify, commercial Caddys are subject to a maximum of:
•30mph in built up areas
•50mph on single carriageways
•60mph on dual carriageways
•70mph on motorways

Well that told me.
Just done done some searching, has anyone who has added a rear seats and windows ever tried to change the class to Dual purpose vehicles so these lower limits won’t apply ?

Yes. I added rear seats and side window.

They changed it to "MPV". It seems to be the same rules as DPV, so I believe I'm now safe for car speeds

Technically the class won't change as such, it will still be N1 (light commercial), as opposed to M1 (passenger car). Your best bet would be to try and change the body type to Dual Purpose Vehicle or MPV (Caddy Life has MPV on the V5, but then I suppose it's a van derived car, Caddy 2K unfortunately was never a car derived van, I think the 9K was). My point being, it's probably easy to change the body type than the classification.

Watching with interest.

My Maxi Kombi is registered N1 (light commercial), some are M1 it seems to depend on the first owner.

The speed limits reference the construction and use regs not the DVLAs vehicle registration categories which do not match.

I've checked and documented that a Kombi meets the definition of a dual purpose vehicle, the only grey area being whether you consider the seats to be permanently fitted or not (the floor panel is welded in, but the seats themselves can be lifted out). I had an MOT station review and counter sign this document, but have not sent it to the DVLA.
