Bit of trouble while fitting a reverse camera, any thoughts?

Post by AceCaddi »

Hi,

Fitting a reverse camera on the caddy, and before I started running the cables in properly I tested it all out by just running the cables loosely and it all work fine, so disconnected it all and run all the cables in and no it won’t work at all.
Screen just goes white and lines come up, have a little player with the connections and it make change the lines of the screen but no picture comes through.

It’s a cheap eBay special that came in the box when I bought the van. Just annoying as I seen it work before hand Image

The black chunky bit by there did feel pretty warm when I disconnected everything, could that be an issue?

I’ve also no pulled all the cables back out to make sure I didn’t snag anything or any obvious breaks and it all looks completely fine. So re run the cables back in loosely again and still nothing

On the other plug to this. You have your 12V + and ground. Tested it all before I connected it loosely and it was totally fine

On the diagrams I’m finding online it’s saying to come off the reversing live cable. I didn’t do this I picked up its own 12v supply which stayed on when the van is in.
Have I maybe burnt it out? Image

On my Tailgate caddy, I found that the tailgate was a bad ground due to poor conductivity over the door hinge. What worked was grounding it to the metal on the wiper motor, which is grounded through a wire leading back through the loom.

The first ground point would yield static and occasionaly video, but pretty much unusable.

I also pulled 12V from the fusebox and used a relay triggered by the reversing light to switch the camera on and off.

Thanks, I’ll look at the ground connection again and look at fitting a relay Image

Let me know how it goes. From what I learned, the 12V from the reverse light isn't strictly 12V and not suited to power the reverse camera. It is however enough to trigger a relay supplying 12V from somewhere else (such as your fusebox)

I don't know what head unit you've got lads but I did this write up when I managed to sort out my camera with my RNS510 head unit. Might be worth looking into if your head unit has a signal for reverse camera rather than trying to go off the reverse light which isn't stable 12v.
