Family Van/ Build

Post by AceCaddi »

Hi, I’m a new owner of a 2007 VW Caddy, which has a 1.9 TDI DSG with 140,000 miles on.

About me: I’ll try and keep it short, I’m a dad of 3 very active kids and 2 not so active pugs. From the valleys of south wales and have a caravan down the gower. So travel back a forth a fair bit so I’ve always wanted some sort of van to do these journeys with and I’ve always like the idea of a 5 seater caddy, now here I am.

About the van: like I said the caddy is a 1.9 TDI with a DSG box, the last owner had it for about 11 years and he did a few mods on the van over the years.
Such as;
-lowered on some Audi S4 18” alloys,
-mk5 GTI brakes
-Touran front end
-TTS front seats
-remapped to around 170bhp
-it’s been sound proof/ insulated and carpets in the back
I’m still unsure of all the mods, im still finding new things now so please if you see anything on the pictures don’t be shy Image

I really liked the van and seen a lot of potential to create the family van I’ve been wanting for a while. I liked that’s it had electric mirrors, electric windows and AC, this was a big tick for me.

So the day I picked the van up I took it straight for a MOT as it’s been parked up for the last 3 years and it flew through which is a good sign, but before I start driving around I wanted it all checked over and have a big service so it’s currently in having some work.
It’s having a full engine service, a DSG box service, new battery, new timing belt and pump, 1 new damper on the rear, 1 new drive shaft. Also currently looking at why the cooling fan comes on straight away every time (possibly a thermostat sensor?) and something keeps draining my battery when the cars left over night so we are investigating that.

After the van is running and all healthy I’m going to jump straight into doing the rear Touran seat conversion, which I’ve been gathering all the parts while the van is in for servicing, I’ve managed to basically get it all (well I think so anyway), I’ve read and watch lots on what to do so I’m hoping I’m ready now. I bought a conversion off someone fairly local which was in his caddy, I bought for a very good price but when he took the rails out, he cut them out and haven’t left me a lot to weld back in so I decided to get new rails. After finding a VW Touran for spare and repairs in a local scrap yard I got to work getting out the rails… and oh my! It was way harder than I expected but I did it! Along with a lot more other things I ended up getting a full conversion for the rear seats ready to go, so that’s my next main project for when the van is back. Also have 2 side privacy windows ready with the whole kit to do and a new Apple play double din radio ready to go in as well.

So my main aim is, before I get to carried away with the van, is to make sure it’s running smoothly and all the bits are working (AC etc) and make sure it’s practical for us as a family to use.

Here’s some photos.

I’m going to just update my progress with the build, I have loads of ideas on what to do, some more than others. I’ll make a list on what mods I’ve been looking at and any tips or tricks or any help will be much appreciated!

Here’s to a new journey ImageImage

Good morning,

Here’s a quick list of some modifications I would like to do to the van, would love to hear your feed back

- Wheels, one of my biggest ones really. I’ve always loved wheel when I was big in the car scene haha, I’ve had numerous wheels from me full refurbing say BBS RM’s etc.
I’ll probably look at running winter/ everyday wheels and then would love to be able to have something very nice and clean then for peak times. For example OZ ultraleggra for everyday and then maybe some big deep dish MONOBLOCKS.
I wouldn’t want to take the size over 18”s, they run with 18” now and it’s very smooth.
I’ve always have some rear axle lowering centralised forge plates to fit.

- Brakes, for now I have the mk5 gti brakes in red, I’ll probably just change the colour for now to a shockingly bright yellow or even green, but I would love to go for a set of Porsche brakes or something along them lines in the future.

- Steering wheel, I own, still brand new in its box, a grip royal steering wheel that I’ve owned for about 10 years. Would love to finally put it on a vehicle, would be with a snap off boss kit.

- reverse camera, this is something I’ve got and will be running it when I take all my head lining and sides off while I’m working on fitting the Touran seats.

- MK4 Smokey rear lights, this is a must! I’m sorry but these make a huge impact on the rear in my opinion.

- R32 rear style bumper, while we are on the back of the van I’d like to change the bumper to the R32 style, I’ve been recommended to got for plastic and not fibreglass.

-R32 style exhaust, I can’t have a r32 style bumper without the exhaust now can I 🤌Image

- window tints, front and back window tint, the side windows in fitting are fully privacy so I’ll keep them like that.

- De wiper, the rear wipers must go! Haha

- Rear Spoiler, I think the rear of the van would be complete with a rear spoiler kit.

- Roof Rails, I think I’m going to have to have roof rails for the surfboards, it’s a must for us as a family.

The next couple of modifications I’m still thinking on.

- front splitter, I love the look of them but practicality… it’s just going to get smashed off, way to many speed bumps around by me haha, so we will see!

- bonnet bra, I’ve seen the plastic front bonnet scoops/ bra on some caddy’s, they look really cool in my opinion but something I haven’t really looked into.

- New front seats, currently got the TTS front seats but I would love to have some GTD front seats or maybe something else.

The final thing then would be a full respray, im really liking the thought of a dark green caddy, like a candy dark green, I think it would look awesome! or even candy red! ImageImage plenty of time to decide on that though

Update: impulsive buy and a bargain! I just bought a set of OZ ultraleggra’s 18” 8J, 3 came with tyres which are winter Pirelli’s with very good tread.
They need refurbing but I’m very happy with the purchase

Still can’t work out why the AC isn’t working, may have to take it to a specialist. so going to crack on and start the Touran rear seat conversion. Pretty sure I’ve got all the parts now.

Also the OZ ultraleggra’s have been dropped off for refurbishment, staying with with original colour but I’ve bought Red OZ centre caps for it and I’m now going to clean and repaint the callipers red which they are now.

I must say I’m tempted to put on the rim protectors once they are refurbished haha.

My main goal for now is just to get it practical and get the Touran rear seats in with the windows and most probably re carpeted. Then hopefully a few little mods at a time

I was pretty lucky with the van, the guy before always did the electric windows. That retro kit looks alright to be fair.
Regarding the door cars though I wouldn’t mind the Touran door cards

Quick update, got the van back last night and took it for a quick spin. Van is pulling and driving very nice after all the work Image

Update on the none working AC.. I believe I’ve found the probably, have a fault with the Heater control panel, I have live and earth to it but no life in the buttons, so bought a new one and it’s on the way Image

The new battery kept dying every night as well 🪫 so after some fault finding by a friend he found a make do fuse under the passenger side glovebox/ space which is feeding a live supply to the spot lights in the back but because they en connected up yet it keeps shorting out on the earth and draining the battery Image
It’s been disconnected and the battery is back fine Image

Did you get them alloys from Brecon by any chance? If so they were an absolute steal😂 I nearly got them myself but didn’t know if the ET would give it to much poke.
