Re: DIY Maxi camper/MTB conversion
Hi Jon,
Did you carpet line directly over the insulation on the upper side panels? Or did you fit ply first?
If so, where did you drill through to fit the ply?
Cheers,
Chris.

Re: Jon’s camper/MTB conversion
Hi Chris,
If you’re referring to the panels above the rear wheel arches (where you’d find windows in a Caddy Life), they have 6mm ply fitted.
I made cardboard templates for each side to get the shape/coverage right once the insulation had gone in. Sadly, I don’t have any photos of how they’re attached but will do my best to describe!
I used some small (25mm) right angle brackets with pre drilled/countersunk holes and attached these around the interior facing edge. Because they are only about 2mm thick, I was able to bend them to shape to fit the van body around the ‘window’.
Then it was just a case of drilling some small holes in the internal metalwork (the bits around the window with void space behind). My van was already riddled with holes from several previous commercial ply lining kits but I know others are understandably more reluctant to make holes!
I used some small pop rivets instead of screws to get a nice tight and rattle-free fit, as the carpet is over the top.
Hope that helps and apologies for the lack of pictures!
Cheers

Hi Jon,
where did you find the awning rail for the rain gutter? What glue/silicon did you use for fastening? Still solid?
Cheers Johan
Ps. Neat build!

Thanks Johan!
The awning rail is one of these:

It’s stuck down with Sikaflex 221 and still rock solid 18 months and many breezy awning setups!

In the UK CMC Reimo normally have the Caddy rail in stock.
Ask for Stuart

Thanks!
Is it possible to roll the awning rail into a somewhat smaller roll, suitable for sending via postal service? I live in Sweden..
Cheers

Re: Jon’s camper/MTB conversion
It certainly was a long tube: it’s slightly flexible (to follow the curve of the roof) but not coil-able!
I’d have thought Reimo has distribution in Sweden?

Re: Jon’s camper/MTB conversion
Alternatives to the Reimo
Keder PVC
https://www.kedersolutions.com/products/radius-rail/
Bainbridge
https://www.bainbridgeint.com/Item.aspx ... tNo=G512BK
Trivantage
https://www.trivantage.com/pvc-track-14 ... ite-250830
Bainbridge and Trivantage look almost identical to Reimo (Reimo often rebadge items)
May be a local Keder supplier ?

Re: Jon’s camper/MTB conversion
There's a Reimo webpage in Swedish, but prices are in euro, and the keder list is sold out/unavailable, so it's probably just a machine translated mirror of the German site. Most Reimo-retailers in Sweden seem to sell RV's, rather than accessories, so I'll shoot Reimo an email. Thanks for your help!

Re: Jon’s camper/MTB conversion
I'm considering putting an awning rail on both the left and right side for flexibility. Are there any downsides to filling the rain gutter with a rail? Water going in the wrong place? Other?

2 rails should be fine I would think, and a useful idea too.
