VW Extended Warranty

Post by Phatboy »

My Approved Used warranty is about to end and my quote for another year is £380!

The warranty book also states under exclusions item 7. "Vehicles modified in any way from the original manufactuer's specification" Its looking like there is no point taking out the VW extended warranty if ANY mods have or will be done to the Caddy.

Does anyone have any experience on how VW have dealt with Warranty claims when their Caddy had been modified? or does everyone just avoid the VW Warranty & main dealer servicing?

Tbh mate it’s only VW stamp in the service book i never extended mines and tend to avoid them as they will only change certain parts at certain mileagesI avoid them tbh .

You can service it with genuine parts .A complete VW service kit IS £120 or there abouts well that’s what it cost me last time and I had a reputable garage carry out the service that way at least I knew it was done. For cost of 1 hrs labour.

The reason I never go to dealers as I once had my Audi in for a service at main dealer to keep up the warranty and before it had went in I topped up the screen wash checked tyres etc then found them trying to charge me for topping up with screen wash (The tank was that full you couldn’t have spat in it ) then phone to tell me I needed tyres that were perfectly legal. After that I’ve never trusted a main dealer again with a service on anything I own.

Mine is not modified enough to effect there warranty so I was looking to get this for mine but over the two years.

For the price it included 1 x major service, 1 x minor service and 2 years breakdown. At the all in price of just over £700 I didn’t think it was bad.

It took them quite a while to get back in touch about it and I kept having to ring and chase someone up. Eventually they got back to me and said they could cover everything apart from the gearbox, which is dsg, because it was serviced at 43000 rather than 40000 and could not guarantee that if I put a claim in for it it would get paid out. Funny how they covered it when I bought off them though knowing that the gearbox had been service at 43000?

But yes if anything was modified they wouldn’t cover it and I imagine they would use modifications, such as an engine remap, to not pay out on asscioated parts like gearbox, driveshafts etc. as the extra torque / power is not as intended and would put these parts under more stress than designed for or some other nonsense excuse.

I have done 3 full services on my 17 plate since owning it .I’m the second owner from new. It has VW dealer service up to 48 587 which it was at when I bought it 48000 was claimed as the big one in the book and meant to have been done before I bought it . I went to the garage I use and I was advised by the mechanic there was no way the filters had been changed especially the air filter it was choked when he showed me it I couldn’t believe what I saw so I changed oil and all filters oil air fuel and pollen and a full health check I then done everything again before my remap at around 56 000 ish and again November last year before it was mot’d 67 ish

Cost for all 3 services come in @ £450 that inc labour from the garage I use and inc Genuine VW parts.

In my opinion main dealer warranties and services are not worth the paper they are written on, I hear stories daily of people getting screwed on all makes and models, vehicles stuck in garages for days, weeks, months and in some cases years while they are accessed (a mates Ford transit as been at Ford since late 2020 for a blown engine and still no further), main dealer servicing is extortionate prices for very little work and you've no idea of the quality of work being done. The story of oil and air filters never being changed for example is a common one.

Ask yourself what you want extended warranty for, the things that are going to go wrong if at all, are unlikely to be covered, things like blown gearboxes etc are a rare occurrence, if you have a trusted local garage you will be hard pushed to find a better service, sure your book doesn't get a vw stamp in it (they don't even stamp books now, it's done on computer so it's only of any use if vw are selling your van on) but if you plan to keep the van for a long time it doesn't really matter, if you sell it locally any buyer knowing you've had it done at the local garage would be just as happy anyway. A local garage has a name to keep and reputation to speak for them.

I do my own servicing but my mates at my local garage get me the parts. I've no quibble using pattern parts but in this case the motor factors supplied genuine parts. If they had done the full job it still would have been less than £150 all in.

Ive basically decided not to take out the VW warranty, use a local independant VW specialist for servicing and i wont have to worry about any mods in future.
