How-to guide on dual-mass flywheel replacement

Post by maadmaxxer »

Hi folks,

I'm new to this forum. I bought my 2013 1.6TDi BMT 102bhp back in February this year and this weekend it developed a loud knocking noise / vibration at idle. The noise goes away as soon as the revs are lifted. From inside the van it feels like the engine is only cable tied to the engine bay!

I suspect it is the DMF that has let go and not an engine mount, the engine isn't rocking around when I open the bonnet, and when I have jacked the van up to investigate both of the front wheels spin slowly and the noise disappears, as soon I stop one of the wheels with my foot the noise returns.

I've had a search on Google and YouTube, but can't find any caddy specific guides that go into a lot of detail on how to swap a DMF. Do any of you have a link that you could share?

I've started taking off parts on top of the gearbox; I'm about to start under the van today, the one thing I don't know is the specialist tools I will need (I own a triple square socket set) until I get to the bolt or nut that stands in my way!

Many thanks for any info or advice in advance.

Just a quick follow up to this, my van didn't have a dual mass flywheel! I only found this out having dropped the gearbox off and removing the friction plate... the air turned blue around me!

I suspect the root cause of the problem was a couple of stones that had wedged themselves into the rubber bushing that connects the underside of the gearbox to the subframe making it a solid piece that couldn't flex with the vibration.

My van is lowered and the vibration occurred after grounding out several times on a gravel track, the subframe was full of dirt and stones too.

So lesson learnt, the van has a solid flywheel!
